“Severance” is a fantastic thriller on Apple TV. It explores many social, and philosophical topics.
One of the many themes is the theme of humanity; what does it mean to be a human; what makes us unique among all species. The showrunners’ answer seems to be… “our memories”. For example in a scene from Episode 6, Season 2, Dylan envies his outie and talks about his other self as if he was another person.
Is it a good answer to this question we have been trying to answer since forever? Perhaps. I have some problems with this answer, however. What about people that lost their memories or people that are unable to form new memories? What about people with dementia or Alzheimer’s? Are they not people, too?
